Collection of smaller items for the use in hospitals – Various sources

In my search for hospital related knitting patterns, I stumbled on a lot of smaller patterns that I feel could work best if they were bundled. So that is what I ended up doing.

Below are patterns for a wash cloth, a knitted wipe, an eye bandage and a pillow. I sourced these from 3 different pamphlet, two of those annoyingly sharing the same name and publisher.

I would also dare say these are excellent patterns for beginner knitters. It’s a lot of straight knitting with the rare new technique you get to practice.

It is probably not random these things are east to make. Heaven’s know they needed many of these things.

Surgical dressings, hospital garments and supplies for U.S. military relief

Wash Cloth:

Materials : 

• Sport weight cotton yarn
• 3.5 mm or US4 needles

Instructions:

Cast on 61 stitches

Knit in garter stitch, slipping the first stitch for a neat edge.

Knit until 25cm or 10 inches in length

Cast off

Knitted Wipes or sponges:

Materials : 

• Sport weight cotton yarn
• 4mm or US5 needles

Instructions:

Cast on 35 stitches. 

Knit 5 rows  in garter stitch

Row 1: Knit 1, yarn over until end of row

Row 2: Knit the knit stitches and drop the yarn overs. This creates larger stitches and a sort of mesh effect

Repeat the above two rows 9 times.

Knit 5 rows stockinette and cast off

Weldon’s Garments and hospital comforts

Knitted  eye bandage

Materials : 

• Sport weight cotton
• Size 2mm or US0 knitting needles
• A linen or cotton tape about 3,5cm or 1inch wide and 1,4m or 1,5 yards long

Instructions:

Cast on 11 stitches

*Knit 1, knit in the front and back of the next stitch, knit until end of row*

Repeat ** until you have 27 stitches on your needle

Knit for 88 rows.

*K1, knit 2 stitches together, knit until end of row*

Repeat ** until you have 11 stitches on your needle

Cast of stitches.

Cut your tape in 2 pieces, one 46cm or 18 inches and one 91cm or 36 inches. Attach to either side of the knitted bandage.

Useful knitted pillow

Materials : 

• 200 grams of DK yarn
• Size 5,5mm or US8 needles
• Filling

Instructions:

Cast on 120 stitches.

Knit garter stitch for 28cm or 11 inches

Cast off.

Fold the longer side double and crochet edges in regimental colours, filling as you go.

The finished dimensions should be 38cm/15 inches by 28cm or 11 inches.
